How is it Fall Already?

September?! How did that happen? I remember leaving our office the third week of March, spending the weekend with our children and grandchildren and telling my husband "Happy 60th Birthday". Two days later I dropped him at the emergency room door and headed home to wait to hear what he was suffering from. The answer: pneumonia and COVID. He was in the COVID wing. The next day was ICU and the following day he was sedated and put on a ventilator. After 7-8 days they were able to get him off of the ventilator and step down to oxygen. He had a terrible case of hiccups. Fourteen days after his admission, he came home by transport because I was quarantined and he had lost so much weight and body strength that he wasn't able to walk. He had lost almost 25% of his body weight and his muscles were so weak from laying in the bed for 2 weeks. We then had to quarantine for two weeks and at the end of that I was tested for COVID. Since I was only running a low grade fever through his hospitalization, my doctor didn't have me tested. So off I went for a blood test -- 2 vials of blood and 3 days later I hear that I do have the antibodies but whether I had the active virus, the results were unequivocal. I had to have a nasal swab, but when I got to the doctor's office they were out of nasal swab tests, so I had to have the one that went down your throat and take 3 samples. Really? I'm a gagger! Let me tell you, it was a long process with lots of gagging and laughing -- I had an awesome nurse who made it fun. Oh, and there was also another week of quarantine in there. So now we're almost at the end of May.

My husband breezed through physical therapy and now he walks 3-5 miles 3-5 days a week (but not in the rain!). You wouldn't know what all he went through unless you really knew us. He says he no longer fears death and jokes that maybe he's immortal! We have much to be thankful for, including all the prayers from friends and family in the U.S., but also from folks in Canada, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, and southeast Asia.

I found that while he was in the hospital I had NO interest in picking up a book to read, even though it would probably have been good for me to escape to a wonderful Amish fantasy world. I have since been reading again and want to share my accomplishments with you. I will say that I so enjoyed all of the books I've read so far this year, but the one that has touched me the most was Piece by Piece by Laura Bradford.
